What you can ride
- Engine size: 125 cc maximum.
- Power: 11 kW (15 hp) maximum.
- Power-to-weight ratio: 0.1 kW/kg maximum.
Every 125 sold new in Europe meets these limits: roadsters, adventure bikes, retro bikes, small sports bikes or scooters.
A1 licence or car licence + 7 h?
The A1 licence can be taken from age 16, with a theory and a practical test.
If you have held a car licence for at least 2 years, a 7-hour training course at a riding school is enough to ride a 125, with no exam. It covers motorcycles and automatic scooters alike.
Choosing your 125
- In town, a scooter or a light roadster slips through traffic easily.
- On the road, a 125 with large wheels (adventure, roadster) is steadier and more comfortable.
- Weight matters more than power: a light bike is easy to handle at a standstill.
- Motorways are possible, but a 125 quickly reaches its limit there.
What next?
The A2 licence, from age 18, opens up bikes up to 35 kW: the next step to ride further and carry a passenger more comfortably.
