What you can ride

  • Power: 35 kW (47.6 hp) maximum.
  • Power-to-weight ratio: 0.2 kW/kg maximum.
  • Restricted bike: its original power must not exceed 70 kW (95 hp).

There is no engine size limit: a 700 cc bike restricted to 35 kW is allowed.

Native A2 bike or restricted bike?

  • Native (often 300 to 500 cc): no restriction kit to pay for or remove, a lighter and usually cheaper bike.
  • Restricted (often 650 to 900 cc): a bike you can keep and derestrict once you get your full A licence, with more torque at low revs.

The restriction kit is fitted by a professional and must appear on the registration document.

Starting out with an A2

  • Seat height: at a standstill, tiptoes are fine at first; an optional low seat or a lowering kit helps a lot.
  • Weight: a light bike is reassuring when manoeuvring and making U-turns.
  • Insurance: a sports bike costs much more to insure than a roadster.

What next?

After 2 years with an A2 licence, a 7-hour training course is enough to get the full A licence, with no exam.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum power with an A2 licence?

35 kW, i.e. 47.6 hp, with a power-to-weight ratio of at most 0.2 kW/kg.

Can I ride a big bike with an A2 licence?

Yes, engine size is not limited: a motorcycle can be restricted to 35 kW as long as its original power does not exceed 70 kW.

How do I go from an A2 to a full A licence?

After 2 years with an A2 licence, you take a 7-hour training course at a riding school. There is no exam.

Do I need both feet flat on the ground as a beginner?

No: tiptoes are enough for most beginners, especially on a light bike. A low seat or a lowering kit can gain 2 to 5 cm.

Native or restricted A2 bike: which one to choose?

A native bike is lighter and cheaper; a restricted bike lasts longer, since it can be derestricted once you get your full A licence.
